The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has declared that it would risky to pay the HSE cyber hackers their $20 million ransom.
Coveney was speaking on RTE’s The Week In Politics and said that there would be severe consequences to paying such a ransom.
Coveney said that the HSE has “effectively set up a war room” to deal with the attach and that was supported by a number of Government departments and groups including Interpol, Garda and an international computer company.
“The truth is what has happened right across our HSE healthcare system is malware has been inserted across the network. It is going to take some time to clean that data piece by piece and protect as much of the data as possible,” Coveney said.
Coveney was pushed on whether the government was going to pay the €16 million ransom and replied by saying that there were “real consequences” to paying a ransom to criminals.
“We have a lot of smart people in both the public and private sector working with a Government team to try best protect private information that is being hacked effectively.”
