The Department of Justice is looking to crackdown on fraudulent insurance claims by introducing tough new penalties.
It is understood the Department is set to punish those found guilty of such offences by handing out prison sentences.
The new laws comes after a new report from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland, found that 1 in every 8 insurance claims they handle are fraudulent.
Speaking about the growing issue a spokesperson for the bureau said the issue needs to be resolved sooner rather than later as fraudulent claims are costing companies millions each year.
