Dealz has been ordered to pay €7,000 over ‘humiliation’ of paralympic athlete

A paralympian athlete was given €7,000 as payment for the “humiliation” she endured when a security officer attempted to inform her that she couldn’t bring her guide dog into a Dealz store, reports RTE.

Following an incident at a store in the Ilac Centre, Dublin 1 on 23 August 2018, Nadine Lattimore, who competed for Ireland in track and field at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, filed a complaint under the Equal Status Act 2000 against Dealz Limited. As a result, Lattimore was awarded the award at the Workplace Relations Commission.

The retail company is also required to provide equality training to its employees and post signs informing customers that service dogs are welcome in their stores, reports RTE.

According to Ms. Lattimore’s evidence, she heard “a commotion” behind her as she was heading to the pay register with her guide dog to search for help after entering the store to buy balloons.

Ms. Lattimore said that she didn’t understand it was about her until she overheard a man remark “something like, ‘excuse me, that dog is not allowed in here.'”

“I felt humiliated and embarrassed and somewhat vulnerable,” Ms. Lattimore stated. She asked for security, and the man replied that he was; then she asked for the manager, who was on her way.

The manager said right away that Pilot, her dog, was “welcome” in the store and that the incident “should never have happened” due to an error, reports RTE.
