The plane wreckage that recently washed ashore on a remote Indian Ocean island has been confirmed as belonging to a Boeing 777 model.

Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 is the only Boeing 777 currently unaccounted for, so the part almost certainly came from the doomed flight.

The two-metre long part has been shipped to France for further analysis, and if verified to be part of Flight MH370, it is hoped it will provide some insight as to what really happened on the fateful flight.

Flight MH370 vanished from the skies on March 8 last year, after veering off course by thousands of miles. It is believed the aircraft flew until it ran out of fuel and crashed somewhere in the far reaches of the Indian Ocean.

All 239 people onboard are presumed dead.
