Department of health reports that 6,666 unborn babies were aborted in Ireland in first year of legalisation

A report for the Oireachtas on the number of unborn babies killed in the state in the first year since the legalisation of abortion has shown that 6,666 pre-born children lost their lives to the procedure in the 12 months from December 2018 to December 2019.

The Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 legalising abortion became law in December 2018 after the revision of the constitution was approved by referendum earlier that year.

The figures show that since the legalisation of abortion in the Republic of Ireland, the number of Irish babies being aborted has more than doubled when compared to the number of Irish women who travelled to the UK for abortions on average per year before legalisation.

In the last year before legalisation of abortion, 2,879 women travelled to the UK to end the life of their unborn baby, a trend which had been on a steady decline.

This shows that with it can be assumed that well over 3000 Irish babies that would have otherwise lived, died by abortion due to the Repeal of the Eighth amendment in the first year of legal abortion in Ireland.
