The Department of Justice issued the most migrant registration cards in history in 2023, earning about €71 million in revenue, reports RTE.
An annual cost of €300 is charged to non-EU and non-UK migrants in Ireland in order to get an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card.
According to the Migrants Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI), the card would cost €20.50 to create and mail.
The number of non-European migrants has increased, and so has the amount of money that the Department of Justice is collecting, reports RTE.
A few migrants are not required to have an IRP card. Those under the age of eighteen, asylum seekers, refugees, and those married to Irish or EU citizens or their relatives are among them.
More than ten years ago, Lijie Shao travelled to Ireland as a Chinese student. Her current employer is Dublin City University, reports RTE.
Although Dr. Shao paid for her IRP card during her time as a student using her savings, she claimed to have known others who received financial assistance from their parents for the same purpose.
“We don’t have any choice, we have to pay that [€300 fee] otherwise we won’t be able to continue to study and we will become illegal here,” she said, reports RTE.
