
Injuring the two occupants, emergency personnel said that an SUV in South Korea’s capital was abruptly swallowed by a sinkhole on Thursday, reports Breaking News.
A white sport utility vehicle was completely submerged in the eight-foot-deep hole that suddenly developed on a roadway in Seoul’s downtown, according to photos taken at the site.
The 82-year-old male driver and the 76-year-old female passenger of the car were both saved by emergency personnel, reports Breaking News.
The event happened at around 11.20am, and no one else was wounded, according to the Seodaemun district fire station in Seoul.
It was not immediately clear how the injured people were doing.
As of Thursday night, there were still restrictions on traffic in the Seondaemun region while officials and workmen fixed the damaged road and looked into what caused the sinkhole.
Legislators were informed by South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport last year that the country had at least 879 sinkhole reports between June 2023 and 2019, reports Breaking News.
According to the government at the time, broken sewer lines were the reason behind nearly half of those sinkholes.
A 48-year-old Indian tourist vanished in Malaysia’s capital last week when she fell into a 26-foot-deep sinkhole after a sidewalk gave way beneath her. Authorities speculated that she could have been carried off by a subterranean water stream, reports Breaking News.
