Drunk drivers sentence cut to five years

James McDonagh was sentenced to seven years in prison due to the death of a father on St Patrick’s Day, 2010, has had his sentence reduced to five years. The man was hit by McDonagh while he was out walking at Hilly Road in Drumshanbo.

McDonagh had pleaded guilty to drunk driving on February 24th, 2012 and was sentenced on May 15th, 2012 at Carrick-on-Shannon Circuit Criminal Court.

McDonagh was drunk after drinking eight pints when he decided to get behind the wheel on the day of the incident.

Yesterday the Court of Appeal suggested a sentence of five years instead of seven would be issued due to the scale of the case.
