Eighty-five percent of people who applied for asylum at Dublin Airport in 2023 arrived without a correct identity document

In 2023, 4,712 individuals landed at Dublin Airport and made asylum claims; 4,007 of them lacked identity documents or had fraudulent ones.

Nearly 87% of the 2,591 males who requested refuge at Dublin Airport last year did so with fictitious or nonexistent identity documents.

Michael McNamara, an independent TD from Clare, said it is astonishing that the legislation is not being enforced.

“It’s an offence to present at the frontiers of the State without valid identity documents,” he said, reports Newstalk.

“Last year the State didn’t seem to want to prosecute anyone, however in the last few weeks people have been prosecuted”, reports Newstalk.

As a “deterrent” for violating immigration regulations, a man was sentenced to two months in jail this week after showing up at Dublin Airport arrivals without a passport, identity, or travel documentation.

“I note prosecutions have started, this to be begs an awful lot of questions,” Deputy McNamara said, reports Newstalk.
