At the conclusion of a press conference with the Taoiseach on Wednesday, EU Council President Donald Tusk mused “what the special place in hell for those who promoted Brexit looks like”.
The press conference followed a meeting between Tusk and the Taoiseach regarding the UK’s demand to renegotiate the ‘Irish Backstop’.
President Tusk insisted that the backstop was non-negotiable and that he and the Taoiseach were preparing for the “fiasco” that they claim a no-deal Brexit will be.
As the two leaders left the conference the Taoiseach was heard on microphones telling President Tusk “They’ll give you terrible trouble, the British, for this.”.
Tusk reiterated the EU’s desire to see the democratic will of the British people in the 2016 referendum overturned stating
“I know that still a very great number of people in the UK, and on the continent, as well as in Ireland, wish for a reversal of this decision. I have always been with you, with all my heart.
“But the facts are unmistakable. At the moment, the pro-Brexit stance of the UK prime minister, and the Leader of the Opposition, rules out this question.
“Today, there is no political force and no effective leadership for Remain. I say this without satisfaction, but you can’t argue with the facts.”
