Huge crowds of proud Carrickmacross residents took to the streets of their beloved Co Monaghan town, united in a powerful display of patriotism and resolve. The peaceful march, one of the largest in the town’s history, voiced demands for stronger community safety and action against anti-social behaviour threatening Ireland’s cherished way of life.
Sparked by rising concerns over crime, including a recent knife incident on Main Street, locals rallied from Cloughvalley Park through Farney Street, waving tricolours and chanting for their town’s future. Independent Councillor Seamus Treanor stirred the crowd, declaring, “We need our town back,” urging a zero-tolerance stance on crime, as reported by Northern Sound. A local woman echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are fearful for our generations to come,” per Northern Sound, as the community stood firm for its heritage.
Gardaí maintained order, with posts on X praising the protest’s unity and comparing it to nationwide rallies in Coolock and Blessington. The Roma community, addressing tensions, condemned crime and pledged to strengthen ties, stating, “We are also members of the community in Carrickmacross,” according to Northern Sound.
With garda numbers up 16% in the region over the past decade, Councillor PJ O’Hanlon confirmed Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan’s commitment to robust policing, per Northern Sound. As Carrickmacross prepares for its May 30-June 2 Street Festival, this proud Irish town stands tall, determined to protect its spirit and reclaim its streets for future generations.
