Former Pope Benedict XVI. he was “stable” and “resting well” last night, the Vatican said.

The update comes amid health concerns for Pope Francis’ predecessor, whom the pope called “very sick” when he asked people to pray to God to comfort him “to the very end”, reports Sky.

The former head of the Catholic Church, who was the first to retire in 600 years, was able to attend Mass in his room, the Vatican said.

After his retirement, he assumed the title of Pope Emeritus and chose to spend his retirement in seclusion in a converted convent in the Vatican.

Earlier this week, the Vatican said the 95-year-old’s condition had suddenly “worsened due to age”.
