After an Anti-Lockdown protest in Dublin this weekend, the Gardai Commissioner Drew Harris said “there was a conglomeration of groups involved in demonstrations including anti-maskers, anti-vaccination groups, anti-lockdown groups, and elements of the far-left and far-right.

After criticism from Leftist politicians Paul Murphy and Mick Barr, Drew Harris issued an apology for including the “far left” reports RTE. No apology has been issued by Drew Harris to so-called “far right” politicians.

In the apology, Drew Harris said “despite initial indications, following further investigations, there is no corroborated evidence of extreme left factions being involved”.

An Garda Síochána went on to define what “far left” means to their organisation saying they regard extreme left factions or groups as those who are intent on using violence for political means.

According to Newstalk, Fine Gael Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee said the Commissioner was referring to “violent Republican groups” when he mentioned the far-left.

“The Garda Commissioner has clarified that and his remarks, when he referenced the far-left, were in reference to more violent Republican groups, not in any political persuasion,” she added.
