Four individuals have died in separate road collisions in the counties of Mayo and Westmeath, prompting Gardaà to issue a repeated call for all drivers to “exercise extreme caution and stay safe”, reports RTE.
Garda Superintendent Liam Geraghty said in a statement today evening that the past three days’ occurrences on the roadways “once again clearly demonstrate the tragedy that can befall anyone of us.”
“No person wakes up and goes out on our roads to cause or be involved in a traffic collision, in particular no person intends to cause someone’s death or be fatally injured.”
Since Sunday, four people have lost their lives on Irish roads; yesterday evening, a lady and her eight-year-old daughter perished in a crash in County Mayo, reports RTE.
This morning, a two-car incident in County Westmeath claimed the life of an 80-year-old man. This was the second traffic death in the same region since Sunday. Joe Marroquin is the name given to him.
He was a passenger in one of the vehicles when the collision happened on the R394 near Gartlandstown, Castlepollard, at approximately 5:30 in the morning. He was pronounced dead at the spot, reports RTE.
His 60-year-old wife, who was operating the vehicle, suffered severe injuries and is receiving medical attention at Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.
With injuries deemed to be non-life threatening, the two males in the second car, who were in their 30s and 20s, were brought to hospitals in Mullingar and Tullamore, reports RTE.
