Gardai caught a total of 4,905 drivers using mobile phones while at the wheel during the first two months of this year.
The figure represents a massive 24% increase over the same period the previous year.
Gardai issued a total of 81,199 penalty points to all these motorists.
Motorists are urged to put their mobiles away while driving, and exercise caution on the roads, particularly over the coming Easter period.
