Gardai continue to investigate Dublin’s Black Lives Matter protests which Varadkar failed to condemn despite lack of social distancing

The Gardaí have launched an investigation into Monday’s Black Lives Matter protests which took place in Dublin city centre, Ballsbridge and in Blanchardstown for breaching the Covid-19 lockdown.

The Gardaí confirmed an investigation was launched and is being conducted under section 5 of the Health Act 1947 (Section 31A-Temporary Restrictions) (Covid-19) (Amendment) (No 3) Regulations 2020 which “places restrictions on the holding of an event”.

Major media outlets and members of the government, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, spoke glowingly of the large demonstrations which footage and images show ignored social distancing rules likely attracted many attendees from beyond 5KM.

Taoiseach Varadkar did not condemn this mass breach of his own lockdown rules, which he has ordered the Gardaí to strictly enforce in other situations and actually praised it tweeting:

“Racism is a virus that we have been fighting for millennia.
Despite the progress we have made, it is no less virulent today and no less dangerous.
We need to show solidarity as people of all races & backgrounds around the world come together to stop its spread and defeat it.”

Some are now asking can we all disregard the lockdown and simply tell Gardaí we are protesting the death of a convicted home invader in Minnesota when travelling beyond 5KM?
