“Gardai were to blame” – Mixed reactions to gardai chasing car in Dublin which resulted in woman (60s) killed in crash

Gardaí are looking for the driver of a car who hit and killed a 60-year-old woman in Dublin last night, reports RTE.

The woman’s name is Carol Seery.

The hit-and-run happened on Phibsborough Road, where Mrs Seery was visiting her husband.

Gardai recovered a vehicle, a silver Honda Civic 07D, abandoned nearby.

No arrests were made.

Just after 9pm last night, a car sped through the inside lane before crossing the Cross Guns Bridge to the outside lane.

Ms Siri, who had gone out for a meal with her husband, a retired police officer, was crossing the road to catch a bus home when a car hit her and killed her, reports RTE.

CCTV footage of speeding through the area has been captured.

The vehicle, which had not been reported stolen, failed to stop but was dumped in nearby Avondale Road a short time later. The matter is being forensically investigated.

The Honda Civic appears to have been recently purchased but is not registered. Gardaí are working to trace the current owner.

While gardaí investigate, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is conducting a separate investigation into the conduct of officers who approached the vehicle before the fatal hit and run.

In a statement, GSOC said: “GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána on the night of Wednesday 4 October, following a road traffic incident in the Phibsborough area of Dublin. The referral was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. The matter is now under examination by GSOC and no further comment will be made at this time,” reports RTE.
