If you’ve got any spare cash lying around, youth are likely to get some good items at a heavily discounted price over the coming days.

After years of imposed austerity and frugality, Christmas 2014 had been predicted to be a bumper time for retailers. However, such prediction has failed to pass. Figures show that consumer spending is barely up from last year.

Winter sales are now on course to be some of the biggest on record, as retailers desperately try to turn stock into cash.

Some retailers across the country have already launched their sales, in a bid to capture some last minute shoppers. Many stores indeed have offered heavy discounts over the last few days, trying to shift stock.

Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) deputy chief Sean Murphy has said that “The Irish customer has never had it this good. Retailers are preparing to drop prices upwards of 80pc in a bid to convert stock to cash.”

Expected high sales of consumer electronics such as tablets, headphones and cameras failed to come through, while sales of toys, books, consoles and games have been buoyant in recent weeks.

Online sales were the big winner this Christmas, with many retailers starting their online sales early on Christmas Day, ahead of physical high street stores, in an attempt to take a big chunk of the consumer spending. Littlewoods for instance have already launched their winter sale online.
