Government announces new grant for tradespeople to aid return to work

The government has announced that it is setting aside €12 million in support grants for people working in trades and taxi drivers to help them get back to work following the Covid-19 lockdown.

The enterprise grant support is aimed at helping people working in trades such as tilers, plumbers, electricians as well as taxi drivers who have been left unable to earn an income due to the Covid-19 lockdown measures and now are having difficulty with the costs of once again starting up their business.

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys announced the scheme and to qualify, a business owner must have stopped getting the pandemic unemployment payment (PUP) after May 17, when lockdown was first eased.

Under the new scheme the support grant will cover wages, new equipment, signage and personal protective equipment.
