Government could be set to introduce a new ‘Track My Crime’ system

Minister-Frances-Fitzgerald

The government could be set to introduce a new system were victims of crime could track the progress of Garda investigations online.

The proposed new system has received the backing from the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald, it is understood that she plans to ask the acting Garda Commissioner if she will assess the “Track my crime” service which is currently being used in the UK.

The service in the UK allows a victim of crime to access a secure website called TrackMyCrime by using a unique reference number. It understood that this website then allows them keep an eye on the progress of an investigation from the moment a crime is reported to when perpetrators are brought to justice.

Independent Senator Ronan Mullen proposed the idea to Seanad recently, as he believes that a similar system should be set up here so victims never feel left in the dark.

Although the Minister for Justice believes the idea would be beneficial to the public, she does however not want it to replace the more traditional interactions between the Gardai and the victim.
