The Government have confirmed that it has pledged €50m in funding for RTÉ over the next five years.
Announcing the decision today the Minister for Communications revealed that the national broadcaster will be given €10m per year over the next five years in an effort to help the broadcaster who has committed to reduce costs by €60m over the next three years.
However the government has refused to pledge a long-term commitment to the broadcaster, but instead confirmed that a commission will be setup to examine the broadcaster and future funding.
The news comes as the RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes called on the Government to step up plans for a transition from a licence fee to a media fee.
