Government urged to take in hundreds of migrants from Moria refugee camp in Lesbos

The usual voices in Irish politics have come together to demand the government accept 400 alleged asylum seekers from the Moria refugee camp which was situated on the Greek island of Lesbos that mysteriously burnt down in early September.

The lead opposition party Sinn Féin has been joined by the Labour Party and the Social Democrats, as well as a number of independent TDs and senators to demand the government to relocate 400 asylum seekers in Ireland.

So far, the Irish government has pledged to take in four children from the destroyed camp.

Greece’s Aegean islands have been swamped by migrants coming from the Middle East and beyond who transit through Turkey and view Greece as merely a steppingstone to reach the generous welfare states of North-Western Europe.

Lesbos has been particularly hard hit by the waves of migrants, who are often used as pawns of Turkey to put pressure on the EU for money or stave off criticism of its aggression in Syria and the Covid-19 locked down Moria camp was already grossly inadequate for the numbers sheltering there.
