Taoiseach Simon Harris has stated that the goal of Ireland’s recognition of the state of Palestine is to generate “momentum towards a peace process” with Israel, reports Breaking News.
Together with Norway and Spain, the government said on Wednesday that it now recognises Palestine as a state.
On Tuesday, May 28, the decision will formally go into force in each of the three nations.
Israel responded by threatening “severe consequences,” reports Breaking News.
Mr. Harris has applauded the historic decision, stating that it should come as no surprise to anyone, “least of all Israel.”
However, Israel Katz, the minister of foreign affairs, asserted on social media that Ireland had “rewarded terrorism.”
Mr. Katz called for a formal censure, or “severe démarche,” and summoned Israel’s envoy to Dublin, Dana Erlich, reports Breaking News.
