In a high-stakes showdown that could sway undecided voters, Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys and Independent Catherine Connolly traded sharp barbs during the final presidential debate on RTÉ’s Prime Time tonight. With just three days until the October 24 election, the studio lights illuminated a fierce contest to succeed term-limited President Michael D. Higgins.

Humphreys, a seasoned minister and credit union veteran, hammered Connolly over her past as a barrister representing UK banks in home repossession cases during the 2008 financial crash. “Before politics, she helped seize Irish homes—how can that represent our values?” Humphreys charged, drawing boos from the audience. Connolly fired back, dismissing the attacks as “Trumpian smears” and a “new low” in Irish campaigning. “I’ve addressed this repeatedly; it’s desperation from a candidate out of touch with everyday struggles,” she retorted, emphasizing her advocacy for social justice and housing rights.

Polls show Connolly leading at 38% to Humphreys’ 20%, with 18% undecided amid concerns over low turnout and spoiled ballots. With Jim Gavin’s withdrawal leaving a two-candidate field—the smallest in 35 years—the debate underscored deep divides on economic recovery and national identity. Viewers tuned in via RTÉ One, News Channel, and Player, with live Irish Sign Language interpretation ensuring accessibility.

As Ireland’s tenth president takes office, tonight’s clash may prove decisive in a race critics call “lacklustre” yet pivotal.
