Here’s why it’s traditional for women to propose to men on leap years, today on February 29th

2020’s leap year means that February 29th will appear in our calendars for the first time since four years ago in 2016. It’s tradition that the leap day is the only time when women are permitted to break with traditional customs and propose to their partners.

Some UK researchers claim that 52% of women are more inclined to do so on February 29th for “something different”.

A number of stories relate back to why leap day proposals are a tradition. The main one is that in the 5th Century an Irish nun called St Bridget complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose.

The story goes that St Patrick offered women the opportunity to propose themselves but only on the condition that it was only every four years, with February 29th turning out to be perfect date to do so, but it didn’t become normalised until the 1800s.

So ladies, there you have it – if you’re feeling love is in the air, go out and buy a cheapy and pop the question – what could possibly go wrong?!
