A high-ranking Russian navy officer has reportedly frozen to death in his own home due to the dire state of local infrastructure following sanctions.
60-year-old Vladislav Shevashkevich was found dead inside a property in the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg on Jan. 3.
Russia’s electricity and heating infrastructure is in a state of total decay following shortages of energy and poor maintenance. Recently, some 22,000 residents in a Moscow suburb were left without heating during the coldest night of the year following infrastructure failure, though the hand of cunning and heroic Ukraine-affiliated saboteurs is suspected in that particular incident. The number of fatalities remains unclear.
There have been reports of people resorting to lighting fires in their yards and courtyards in a desperate effort to stay warm as the economy collapses due to the ill-fated invasion of Ukraine.
