Investigation underway after person dies after being ‘sucked into plane’s engine’ in Italy

A person has died in a tragic incident on a taxiway at a major European airport after reportedly being sucked into an aircraft engine, reports The Mirror.

All flight activity at Milano Bergamo Airport was halted from 10:20am local time 9:20am on Wednesday, following the event in which an individual was reportedly pulled into a plane’s turbine. Authorities have not yet confirmed the precise details, but the airport’s operator, Sacbo, acknowledged that an “incident” had led to the suspension of operations.

In the meantime, flights headed to the airport—one of Italy’s busiest and a key hub for tourists visiting Milan, known as the country’s fashion capital—have been rerouted to Milano Malpensa, reports The Mirror.

A spokesperson for Milan Bergamo Airport posted an update on social media to inform travellers of the situation.

In a message shared on X/Twitter, the spokesperson stated: “SACBO announces that flight operations at Milan Bergamo Airport were suspended from 10:20 am to 12:00 pm due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway, reports The Mirror.

“The causes of the problem are currently being investigated by the authorities. Air traffic resumed at 12:00 pm.”

A man has lost his life after reportedly being “sucked into plane’s engine” while on a taxiway at the busy European airport this morning. All flights at Italy’s Milano Bergamo were grounded from 10:20am local time (9:20am BST) following the shocking event, reports The Mirror.

While officials have not confirmed the exact sequence of events, local media outlets suggest the man had been fleeing police when he ran onto the runway and was allegedly pulled into an aircraft turbine.

It is believed the aircraft was in the middle of a “pushback” procedure — reversing away from the gate — when the man approached and was drawn into the engine, reports The Mirror.

The man sustained “serious” injuries instantly and is believed to have died shortly afterward.

Ryanair, the main airline operating from Bergamo, has cancelled several departures and their return flights in response to the airport’s temporary closure, reports The Mirror.

A Ryanair service from Bristol to Bergamo is currently delayed by around three hours. The return journey is expected to be delayed by eight hours, according to The Independent.

According to CNN, nine flights have been diverted and six rerouted due to the incident where a man was pulled into a jet engine at the Milan airport this morning.

Additionally, eight scheduled departures have been cancelled, and operations were paused until after midday local time, reports The Mirror.
