Ireland is seeing a rise in racism, says Leo Varadkar

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says racism is on the rise in Ireland, reports Breaking News.

The Fine Gael leader said this was “very evident” from the protests outside refugee centres and the spread of “nonsense” conspiracy theories surrounding transplant ideology.

He added: “And then people actually using violence against people who are of a different colour or of a different ethnic background and that’s a matter of real concern,” reports Breaking News.

Mr Varadkar was answering a question about whether he thought there had been a rise in the extreme right in Ireland.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has previously said Ireland has not seen the rise of the far right like other European countries.

Asked if he agreed, the Taoiseach said he did not want to interpret the commissioner’s words, but had “picked up” that he meant far-right politicians elected to parliament or government.

Mr Varadkar said: “We’re not there yet. To the extent that we have far-right parties at all, they’re not significantly represented in the Dail. But we are seeing a rise in racism, that’s very evident to me,” reports Breaking News.
