Irish father handed two month prison sentence for refusing to wear mask on bus, despite medical condition

One week before Christmas an Irish father has been handed a two month prison sentence for failing to wear a mask properly while travelling on Bus Éireann coach from Dublin to Knock, Co Mayo last July after attending the funeral of a loved one.

The Draconian sentence was imposed on Mr Andrew Heasman by Judge Fiona Lydon, who said that Mr Heasman’s behaviour had been “totally inappropriate,” with the Judge Lydon stating that “she was satisfied that all of the ingredients required to secure a conviction had been satisfied by the State.”

Mr Heasman had informed the coach driver who confronted him for not covering his mouth and nose that he had a medical exemption and correctly asserted his right to privacy concerning his medical condition under the data protection act.

Garda Thomas Bowens, who respond to the call, told Castlebar District Court that Mr Heasman was wearing his mask “like a hat” and refused to obey orders to cover his mouth and nose, which prompted other passengers to leave.

Mr Heasman was convicted under the Health Act 1947 and the chilling judgement is a landmark case for Ireland which many citizens are warning is rapidly beginning to resemble a tyrannical, Orwellian state.
