“Irish people died for that flag” – Online anger at Varadkar’s decision to fly the UN’s flag rather than Ireland’s flag out of the GPO at Easter Rising commemorations

The Taoiseach may be busy with coronavirus but many online believe he made a horrendous decision over the Easter weekend by not flying the Irish flag over the GPO during the commemoration.

There is growing anger being expressed online at the decision by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to have the army hoist the UN flag rather than the Irish national flag in front of the GPO on O’Connell Street as part of this year’s Easter rising commemoration last Monday.

In a bizarre and to many, enraging move, the Varadkar decided to fly the UN’s global flag rather than the tri-colour in what he said was “a symbolic gesture” to show Ireland’s solidarity with the UN and the countries of the world fighting Covid-19.

It was a strange move on the part of the Taoiseach and one that would likely be wholly unacceptable in any other nation celebrating its foundation, particularly one such the Easter Rising of 1916 that involved the blood sacrifice of so many patriots.

Hermann Kelly, leader of the Irish Freedom Party, poured scorn on the move tweeting:

“Why are you always celebrating foreign rule or dependence in Ireland Leo? First it was the Black and Tans. Now at time of 1916 Commemoration it’s all about the UN. If it’s not LGBT++ first for you it has to be EU or UN. Anything except Irish Irish sovereignty”
