Every year on February 11, the Catholic world marks the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, commemorating the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at the Grotto of Massabielle in southern France. For Irish people, this date holds special significance, drawing devoted pilgrims to the sanctuary despite the winter chill.

Ireland has long shared a deep devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes. Generations have travelled—often through organised diocesan groups, the Order of Malta, or independent operators—to pray at the grotto, bathe in the miraculous spring waters, and participate in candlelight processions. Though major Irish pilgrimages typically occur in spring and summer, many individuals and smaller groups make the journey around February 11 to coincide with the feast and the coinciding World Day of the Sick.

The date resonates strongly in Ireland, where faith, healing, and care for the vulnerable remain central. Pilgrims seek spiritual renewal, physical comfort for the ill, and solidarity with the suffering. Amid Masses, rosary recitations, and quiet reflection by the Gave de Pau river, Lourdes offers a powerful reminder of hope and divine compassion.

In 2026, as on every February 11, Irish hearts turn once more toward this sacred French shrine, continuing a cherished tradition of faith and pilgrimage.
