Irish unity referendum is definitely not my current priority, Harris claims

According to Simon Harris, the issue of an Irish unification vote is not urgent and does not “arise currently,” reports Breaking News.

The Taoiseach stated that collaborating with the incoming UK administration to assist Stormont’s powersharing institutions was more crucial.

After the Westminster election, Sinn Féin became the party with the greatest representation in Northern Ireland for the first time.

Mary Lou McDonald, the head of the republican party, used the occasion to call on Keir Starmer, the recently appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom, to “embrace the right of Irish self-determination and constitutional change towards Irish reunification,” reports Breaking News.

But Mr. Starmer has already said that he does not see a united Ireland as a possibility.

Mr. Harris stated on the Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme on Sky News that the varying opinions on the constitutional matter were not surprising.

He said: “The fact that we have different views on the constitutional future of Northern Ireland is not earth shattering news. And actually it’s because we have differences in relation to the constitutional question that we must find practical ways of working together. The Good Friday Agreement allows us both have those legitimate, differing aspirations, and there’s a structure in place to address that,” reports Breaking News.
