Slavery is a term repudiated by most people in most countries, and in fact, the act of enslavement is illegal worldwide. Despite this, it is estimated that anything between 20 to 30 million people exist in such state, in one form of slavery or another, in today’s ‘modern’ world.
Slaves have existed for thousands of years, and in fact, their existence is known even before records began. People have long fought and struggled to break free from bondage, for the abolition of forced deprivation of freedom.
Yet, in today’s world, in the 21st century of mankind’s written history, the extremist organization known as ISIS has unashamedly brought slavery, particularly that of women, to the forefront of public eye.
In ISIS’ radical own interpretation of Islam and Sharia law, ‘one should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar (infidels), and taking their women as sex slaves is a firmly established aspect of Islamic law.’
This statement sums up the group’s twisted views on the Islam, on women, and on human rights. To them, ‘infidel’ women are nothing but spoils of war, to be used and traded as they see fit. A commodity, of sorts.
The world at large sees this abhorrent behavior, day after day, yet, it remains powerless to stop it. ISIS forces have proved time and time again that they have the means and the will to wage a ruthless war against anyone standing in their way, and they will not rest until their goals are achieved.
