According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Kamala Harris’s campaign, the Democratic nominee for president, has agreed to the guidelines for the debate versus Republican Donald Trump next week, which include muting the microphones when a candidate is not in the spotlight, reports RTE.
This would be the first debate between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris, who succeeded President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee after the latter decided to resign on July 21 due to a poor debate performance against the former president in late June.
The unnamed insider stated that the Harris campaign was still waiting for an opportunity where ABC News, the network hosting the debate on September 10, will be compelled to turn off the microphones and allow the candidates to speak, reports RTE.
The ascent of Ms. Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket has revitalised a campaign for the party that had been doubting Mr. Biden’s chances.
Although surveys indicated that Mr. Trump had gained ground on Mr. Biden, Ms. Harris has now surpassed the Republican nominee in a number of nationwide opinion surveys.
Ms. Harris urged Mr. Trump to engage in a discussion with her over the weekend, keeping their mics turned on the entire time, reports RTE.
Because they capture casual remarks that are occasionally inappropriate for the general public, so-called “hot mics” can benefit or harm political candidates. Additionally, debaters are unable to interrupt their opponent when using muted microphones.
Jason Miller, a senior advisor to Mr. Trump, expressed his excitement that Ms. Harris and her group had agreed to the guidelines, reports RTE.
“Americans want to hear both candidates present their competing visions to the voters, unburdened by what has been,” he added. “No notes, no sitting down, no advance copies of the questions.”
Additionally, a debate on October 1st on CBS News has been agreed to both Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance and Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, reports RTE.
