James McClean’s wife calls for Proof of Identity checks when creating Social Media accounts

This week, RTE reported on the abuse Derry born footballer James McClean and his family have experienced on social media platforms. Mr McClean, a Derry native from the Nationalist Creggan Estate refuses to wear a poppy which commemorates the deaths of British soldiers in World Wars.

However, Erin McClean, wife of James, now feels it’s time for social media platforms to demand proof of identity in the form of government issued photo identification when using social media.

Ms McClean believes these identity checks would reduce online abuse by people who are publicly anonymous on social media.

It is worth stating that Police forces around the World can usually uncover a users social media identity if suspected of a criminal offence.

As pointed out by many civil liberty groups around the world have concerns about proof of identity checking.
It would lead to the silencing of social justice campaigns which are stifled in countries where Regimes stop free speech and control all media.
