Actor Jim Carrey has launched a blistering attack on Hollywood following the Will Smith slapping incident, saying that he was “sickened” to see that Smith was given a standing ovation shortly after he walked on to the stage to hit host Chris Rock.

According to the Metro, Carrey spoke about the situation to US breakfast show CBS This Morning, saying that he thought Hollywood was “spineless” and that he felt Smith should have been arrested.

Commenting on the fact that Chris Rock has decided not to press charges against Smith, Carrey said that his own reaction would have been different and that he would have announced that he was suing Smith for 200 million dollars.

He took issue with the fact that Smith thought he could hit Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, saying:

“If you want to yell from the audience and disapprove or show disapproval or say something on Twitter, whatever.  You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”

Opinion has been mixed on the issue since Oscars night, with some saying that they understood Smith’s reaction.  However, most people commenting on social media have said that they do not feel that there is ever an excuse for violence and Smith should have controlled himself.

The Academy is due to decide Smith’s fate at a high-powered board meeting today after which they will decide what sanction, if any, they will impose on the actor.
