A jury in California has found that a woman and her wife murdered their six adopted children before committing suicide.
The jury of eight women and six men unanimously found Thursday that Jennifer and Sarah Hart, both 38, had murdered their children and committed suicide by driving off a cliff that ran alongside a highway.
The deceased women were found to have drugged their children before they drove off the cliff side in their 2003 GMC Yukon.
California Highway Patrol investigator Jake Slates said the couple determined that “if they can’t have their kids, that nobody was going to have those kids.” The New York Post reports.
The six children murdered by their adopted parents were ages from 12 to 19.
Coroners were able to determine from autopsy that the children had been drugged while one of the women had an elevated blood-alcohol level.
None of the passengers in the car were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident which was described as unsual by friends of Jennifer Hart who described her as a “seat belt Nazi”.
This evidence led to the conclusion that the deaths were not an accident but rather a suicide/mass murder.
