The Environment Minister Alan Kelly claims he intends on bringing an end to “the scandalous increases in rent”.
Mr Kelly’s announcement means that the government are seriously considering some form of rent controls. The news comes as the Labour party passed a motion today suggesting that new laws imposing a two year freeze on rents will soon be put in place.
Mr Kelly claims the matter is now his number one priority in Government, he said: “We need to look at entering the market, we need to look at a new framework for rent. “I will provide regulations, or indeed legislation or ministerial orders in order to do that. I don’t think it’s something we need to do long-term, but in the short-term the next three to four years as housing supplies develop, we need other methods to address the rental issues in this country.”
