Landmark Ruling: Moore Street buildings have been declared a national monument

There was good news announced last night as the area of Moore Street in Dublin was declared to be a national monument after it was found the preservation order should have been extended to include more buildings than it was previously thought.

The news comes after the Minister For Arts and Heritage originally designated buildings 14-17 as national monuments, but evidence provided by Colm Moore found that the state should in fact have given buildings 13-19 monument status instead. The new ruling was made after the High Court agreed with Mr Moore who brought a case against the State to prevent the Minister from carrying out further works on 13-19 Moore Street.

According to reports the successful appeal will now halt works until the Minister has had an opportunity to review the judgement. The news has been welcomed by many who have campaigned to preserve the buildings as it is believed they where the prime location were many leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising fled to make their last stand before their heroic executions.

It had been recently proposed that a multi-million shopping centre be built in the area, but the proposal was met with widespread criticism from the public and political parties.
