Last clock changes could occur in 2021 as EU votes to scrap daylight savings time

The Irish public could very well be changing their clocks for the last time in 2021 as the European Parliament have voted to scrap daylight savings time.

In a move that could the end of seasonal time changes, MEP’s voted overwhelmingly in favour to scrap daylight savings by 410 to 192.

Although the decision is yet to be made official, the European Parliament is set to enforce the changes in two years time across its 27 member states.

In order for the change to become permanent, all 27 members states will have to discuss which time period they will stay on if they accept the proposals.

The changes could become potentially tricky for Ireland however as the island could potentially have two different time zones should they proceed with fellow member states.

It is thought that two time zones in Dublin and Belfast would be created as the British Government has confirmed that it intends to stick by the current system of changing the clocks every six months, once they leave the EU.
