Leo Varadkar warns Martin that Mary Lou McDonald would want to be ‘top dog’ in a future coalition

Leo Varadkar has cautioned Micheál Martin that if Fianna Fáil forms a Government with Sinn Féin, they may not have an “equal partnership” as Mary Lou McDonald would aspire to be the dominant force, reports The Mirror.

The Taoiseach reiterated his belief that Fine Gael will secure 45 seats in the upcoming election.

It is expected that the next election will be held before March 2025.

In an interview with RTÉ Radio 1’s Today with Claire Byrne, the Taoiseach said: “I think there is a good chance of this Government being re-elected. And I think a partnership between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael would be a more equal one,” reports The Mirror.

“You can’t predict the outcome of an election, but we have a very equal partnership now. A rotating Taoiseach, an equal number of Cabinet ministries. I’m not sure that is the offer Mary Lou would make to Micheál, quite frankly. I think she would want to be the top dog and take all the best jobs,” reports The Mirror.
