A homeless man got his fairy tale ending when he won he won $500,000 (€457,000) on a scratch card in the US.
Michael Engfors was homeless for six years after divorcing from his wife and the failure of his business. A Christmas miracle saw Engfors win the incredible amount of cash off a $10 scratch card in an instance that is normally reserved for fiction.
Engfors had been staying at the Aspen Homeless Shelter in Colorado and had persevered throughout tough times that pushed him right to the edge. Jeremy Kowalis, a worker at the shelter, described Engfors as “deserving”.
“It couldn’t have happened to a better person.,” said Jeremy Kowalis.
“Michael has seen a bottom that has pushed him right to the edge, but he never gave up.
“He knew that if he kept pushing on, eventually his luck would change.”
Engfors now has the opportunity to have a happy Christmas and finally re-establish a relationship with his daughter who he hasn’t seen in 20 years.
