Lithuanian foreign national charged with theft of 116 bicycles estimated at the combined value of €250,000




45 year old Dinas Bimbiras, a Lithuanian foreign national living at an address in Cavan was arrested on Saturday after investigating gardai received directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), reports RTE.

The accused was first arrested in August 2020 after searches in Dublin and Cavan. The Dublin search uncovered bicycles in a container. In Cavan, Gardaí later seized €7,000 in cash as well as a large amount of financial documentation and memory sticks containing photographs of suspected stolen property, including bicycles.

Following examination of the documents, gardaí arranged to have €122,500 frozen in various bank accounts, while a further €6,000 was discovered in a follow-up search of the house, reported the Irish Times.

Last week, Bimbiras was charged with possessing 116 stolen bicycles and a boat engine, which were allegedly discovered in a container at allotments in Kilmactalway, in south Co. Dublin, on Dec. 26, 2019.

He is also accused of possessing stolen power tools at his home address on Aug. 28 last year. The offences are contrary to the Theft and Fraud Act.

Bimbiras was told he must appear again at the district court in September to be served with a book of evidence. Bail was granted and the accused has surrendered his passport.
