Citizens in Co. Offaly rallied together on Saturday to protest against the opening of a Direct Provision Centre for alleged asylum seekers in the town of Tullamore.

As well as locals, activists from other towns such as Oughterard, Co Galway and Achill Island, Co Mayo, who have mounted successful popular opposition campaigns against government plans for similar migrant plantations in their localities, will join the protest to offer support and advice.

Organisers in Tullamore have said they are prepared to take a 24 -7 approach to the protests, modelling themselves after the successful approaches taken by locals of other towns opposing Direct Provision plantations their communities the Connacht Tribune reports.

Oughterard, Co Galway became the centre of national media attention last October, when after several weeks of resistance and solidarity from the local community, the government finally and reluctantly cancelled its plans to establish a Direct Provision Centre in the neglected town.

Similar successful campaigns have been mounted in a number of towns despite hostility from both the government and opposition parties as well as major media outlets.
