‘Major concern’ – Ireland sees a increase in the number of Delta variant cases with fears local lockdowns could be enforced

There are real fears that local lockdowns could be enforced if Ireland sees a significant increase in the number of Delta variant Covid-19 cases around the country.

The Department confirmed that the number of cases has increased by 10 to 126 over the weekend with more increases predicted.

The Delta variant is one of the reasons that the UK will more than likely see an extension date to their lifting of lockdown on June 21st.

It is understood that sequencing up to May 20th showed that there has been a 1% increase in cases of the variant.

The news comes as the Department of Health, NPHET and the Government have confirmed that they are continuing to monitor the the rise in the number of Indian variant cases in the UK.
