Male teacher who inappropriately sent hundreds of messages to male pupils has been removed from Ireland’s teacher register

According to a High Court judgement, a secondary school teacher who was found guilty of professional misconduct for sending three male pupils many improper communications will be struck off the teacher registry, reports Breaking News.

Mr. Justice David Barniville, the president of the High Court, approved the Teaching Council censure on Monday, describing it as the most severe punishment for a teacher.

The court was presented with a 700-page booklet that contained communications the teacher had written to the 14-yr-old children over a period of many months, reports Breaking News.

At the beginning of the hearing, Mr. Justice Barniville issued an order that forbade the publication of any information that may be used to identify the school, students, or teacher.

Eoghan O’Sullivan BL, the Teaching Council’s counsel, informed the court that the teacher had used the school’s Microsoft Teams platform to interact with the children, and that the communications were deemed improper in terms of their time, frequency, and substance, reports Breaking News.

According to counsel, between September 2022 and May 2023, “hundreds and hundreds of messages” totalling 700 pages were sent. He said that a significant volume of messages were sent on the weekends, late at night, and even during school breaks.

According to Counsel, the communications’ initial focus was on a shared love of sports, but as time went on, they “strayed far beyond that,” reports Breaking News.

At the conclusion of the previous year, a panel that was in charge of the Teaching Council’s fitness-to-teach investigation found the instructor guilty on three charges of professional misconduct.

The panel concluded that the behaviour was shameful and dishonourable, and it also discovered that although some of the communications appeared to be about sports, they might be understood in a more sinister way and were suggestive, which could be perceived sexually by a juvenile, reports Breaking News.

Although the teacher admitted that he shouldn’t have done it, he had maintained that the texts were harmless banter or locker room chatter.

Counsel said that the Teaching Council panel was not pleased by the mention of locker room chatter and that there was constant, systemic communication that was obviously improper, reports Breaking News.

After one of the boys’ parents noticed one of the messages after her son had been using her computer, she alerted the school.

Additionally, Mr. Justice Barniville ruled that the instructor would not be permitted to petition for reinstatement on the register for a further three years, reports Breaking News.
