March 8 2014 marked the first day of one of the deepest mysteries of modern aviation.

On that fateful day, Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur, bound for Beijing. It vanished from radar screens shortly after take off, never to be seen again. Experts believe it ended up running out of fuel and crashing somewhere far out into the Indian Ocean, away from any remarkable landmass. Despite an intensive international search, not a single trace of the aircraft has ever been located.

But today, the mystery may begin to be unlocked, after a piece of debris, believed to be part of a Boeing 777 wing -the same model as MH370-, washed ashore in the remote island of La Reunion, east of Madagascar, some 2,000 miles from the proposed search area for the missing plane.

While there is no immediate confirmation whether the debris does belong to MH370, investigations are underway after a serial number was spotted on the surface of the part.

Flight MH370 vanished with 239 people on board, all presumed dead. Multiple theories abound as to what may have happened, ranging from the plausible to the completely outlandish, but no definite answer has ever been provided to resolve this fascinating story.
