New regulations could force pupils to hand in their mobile phones at the beginning of the school day and collect them at the end





New regulations could see pupils attending Irish schools handing in their mobile phone at the start of the school day, and collect them at the end.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the idea behind this rule is the curtailment of cyber-bullying, intimidation, and other acts of harassment.

According to RTE, the Digital Devices in School Education Bill 2018 is proposing that a code of behaviour that would see a standard code for digital devices being used in schools right across the country.

It’s understood that the bill was introduced by Senator Gerard Craughwell (Independent) in the Seanad this afternoon.

According to the national broadcaster, Craughwell believes the bill would be very effectice, saying:
“Some schools have an outright ban on phone usage. Other schools require that phones be turned off and handed up to the class teacher at the start of the school day.

If passed, the new regulation would be in place by the start of the 2018/2019 academic year.
