Nigel Farage says Brexit Party will not contest Conservative seats, will focus on Pro-Brexit Labour constituencies instead

Nigel Farage has announced that his Brexit Party will not field candidates in the 317 constituency where the Conservative Party won seats in 2017, in the upcoming General Election next month.

The announcement was welcomed by Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly who said that the Brexit Party had recognised the risk of “preventing a stable majority government”.

Mr Farage said that standing candidates in these Conservative held constituencies would split the pro-Brexit vote and increasing the likelihood of a Labour-Liberal Democrat government who would then seek to rerun the Brexit referendum in the hopes overturning the 2016 decision.

Rather than fielding over 600 candidates as Farage had said he was planning to, the Brexit Party will now focus on taking seats on other parties, in particular Labour.

The majority of Labour held constituencies in England voted to leave the EU, particularly in the party’s traditional heartland in the north of the country.
