No queues: Claims the government have “killed the economy” as first shopping day sees few shoppers out and about

When lockdown lifted in June 2020, there were crowds and crowds queueing up around the block to get into their favourite shop.

That didn’t happen this morning.

Instead, top retailers like Penneys saw no queues, no mad rush to their door as they opened to the general public for the first time since before Christmas.

There was, at best, a modest and in some places very modest indeed number of people going in for a browse and light shopping.

There have been claims made already today on the first day or retail reopening that the government have killed the economy with their draconian lockdown restrictions that they imposed on the Irish public for far too long.

People are saying that shoppers have gotten used to buying online and they’re not bothered going down for a look.
